"See that girl standing over there...?" The little girl peered over her brother's head, sitting on his shoulders. She was only five, tired from running along the beach all day. But one girl had caught his eye, one among the rocks that the other people were avoiding as if subconsciously. None even glanced at her as the waves crashed among the rocks, the wind blowing back her hair. The farthest out on the rock cropping, others stayed back and played unaware that those rocks were there.
"What girl?" Her brother pointed again, standing on one of the higher dunes that towered over the beach below. His sister leaned farther forward, her hair brushing his ears. The girl still stood there, still as the rocks themselves, the waves seeming to become more agitated by her presence.
"The one in the blue and white dress, with the hat farthest out on the rocks. See her Amiee?" Again he pointed, but Amiee shook her head again. Carefully he lifted his sister off his shoulders and down to the dune, shaking his head at the girl, but Amiee had other plans besides staying still. With her brother occupied by the strange girl, Amiee took off towards the rocks.
"Amiee! Wait!" Chad called after her, chasing her but the little girl was too quick for him. With a head start, she outpaced him easily over the soft sand and to the rocks. "Amiee you're going to get hurt! Stop!" Chad shouted again as Amiee climbed onto the rocks and began to hop and jump her way down to the end.
Water crashed over in front of her, making the rocks more slippery as she navigated to the very end where the girl stood. She was younger than Chad who was nineteen, but not by much. "Miss, my brother wants to know why you're out here." Chad was struggling behind her, slipping on the wet rocks and nearly falling off a few times.
The girl, who to Amiee was a lady, turned slowly to the little girl and smiled brightly. "So you can see me." She sounded surprised, ignoring the shouts from Chad far behind them. "I'm Navireet, the Goddess of this beach." Amiee stared at her in wonder as she knelt down in front of the much smaller girl.
"My name is Amiee and I'm five." She said brightly, sticking out her little hand. Navireet beamed warmly at the girl, now that she was level with her as Chad struggled. Taking Amiee's hand, she placed a small trinket in it.
"My name is Navireet De'Alsa Dutri, I am twelve million, seven hundred and three thousand, one hundred and thirteen years old. It is nice to meet you Amiee." Navireet laughed at Amiee's stunned expression, standing slowly and turning back towards the ocean. "You are a special little girl, wear that always. Some day soon you will be needed." Without any further explanation Navireet dove into the water, her dress turning into the tail of a mermaid mid-air.
Chad finally made it to the end, dripping wet and coughing, he looked around, unable to place where Navireet had gone. Amiee opened her hand to find a golden starfish on a chain in her hand, before Chad could take it she quickly put it on and ran back down the rocks to the shore forcing Chad after her.
"Someday soon you will be needed." Amiee repeated as she waited for Chad to follow, giggling to herself.
